Why Test Broadband Speeds?

Nowadays there is a proliferation of broadband speed tests on the internet. These have arisen in response to the growing difference between the speeds advertised by Internet Service Providers (ISP's) and the speeds actually received by consumers. More and more customers are finding that their speeds are far lower than what they are paying for and research by Moneysupermarket.com in 2007 showed that 44% of 43,000 customers were receiving only a pitiful HALF of the advertised speeds for their internet connections. This massive difference between advertised and received speeds has finally caught the attention of communication regulator OFCOM.

OFCOM has warned ISP's that they must be more transparent about the actual speeds consumers are receiving and there are calls from consumer panels to make ISP's contact customers within a fortnight of joining to inform them of their exact actual top speeds. OFCOM has also introduced, since Valentine's Day this year, important regulatory changes that give consumers freedom to switch ISP's if they are not happy with the service and speeds.

In the past ISP's could bully consumers into staying with them by charging them for changing providers and by creating delays that left consumers without a broadband connection for weeks, a situation that forces a lot of people to reluctantly remain with a provider they were unhappy with. Under OFCOM's new regulations, ISP's can no longer charge for switching to new providers. They must also ensure that the Migration Authorisation Code (MAC), the code which is given to customers to give to their new providers, is passed on within five days of the request. In the past ISP's would wait weeks before giving these codes to customers, in order to deter them from changing. Now under the new regulations consumers are protected from this practice.

These changes are part of what will be a continuing development of adequate regulatory standards that are needed for the booming broadband industry. As it becomes more integral to daily life, and bandwidth becomes more valuable, we will need to ensure that consumer rights are protected.

With these changes in mind, now is a really good time to do a test of your broadband speeds to ensure that you are getting what you are paying for, and that you CAN get what you are paying for. With many of the previous obstacles to changing providers removed, consumer freedom is far greater and worth taking advantage of to ensure you the best deal.

Compare Cable vs. DSL

Okay, so you are finally tired of those slow dial-up internet connections, and you want to go broadband. Good deal. But first, you may be wondering which type of broadband connection is best- DSL or Cable? Or, at least, which of the two gives you more speed for the price? Here we take a look at these two popular broadband connections and try to determine which one is better: DSL vs. Cable.

Cable Speed vs. DSL

The most common question that comes up is which type of connection is faster, DSL or Cable? To answer this, it is important to compare both upload and download speeds. Now, so you have something to compare these speeds to, your average dial-up connection is about 28 - 56 Kbps. Most often, however, you won't be able to get 56k through dial up, as most services can not handle this speed.

The average speed of a DSL download is 1.0 - 1.5Mbps. That's megabytes per second - about 20 times as fast as the fastest dial-up connection. This is fast, but consider Cable, which can give you up to 2 - 3Mbps. Thus, at least for downloading, cable can give you almost twice the speed of DSL - that's impressive. On the upload side, however, cable and DSL are pretty evenly matched. They both provide about 100Kbps - 400Kbps. It seems that cable has won this battle.

What about Price and Quality of Service?

There is more to discuss here besides the speed of the connections. Take price for one. Cable and DSL connections are both going to be more expensive than dial-up. But, DSL seems to be the cheaper of the two at the moment. You can get a good DSL internet connection for about $35 - $45 per month. Cable modem will cost you about $45 or $50 (this price may be included in a cable TV package). These prices, however, are really close and they change almost from month to month.

DSL is nice because you can talk on the phone and be online at the same time. In addition, business-level DSL service provides guaranteed data rates, so your connection speed is never a surprise. On the other hand, DSL speed tends to decrease the further you are away from the data center, and it is typically not as widely available as Cable. Cable speeds are not dependent on distance from the data center, and is occasionally cheaper than DSL when included in a cable TV rate. A cable modem, however, may require costly professional installation, and there may exists some limitations on downloads and uploads. All of these factors should be taken into consideration when choosing either broadband service.

There has been a vast reduction in complaints to Ofcom about switching, with figures dropping from 825 in March to 517 January 2008. All this means the chances of customers finding cheap broadband increases as competition within the sector is rife. Customers can now freely choose who they want their provider to be and this opens the door to better deals as companies know how important it is to keep hold of their existing customers.

Despite the decrease in complaints, the governing bodies still want it to reduce further. This is great news for customers as finding the ideal broadband package is easier than ever. The law permitting the companies to release a customers MAC code was to end soon but due to research carried out, the decision has been taken to extend the programme for another 6 months.

3G EV-DO or How the Internet Got Its Wings!

The Internet, as most people know it, is history.

It just seems like yesterday the Internet was just one big mass of wires and cables; a glorified file sharing warehouse with more than a few too many lines sticking out. One enormous LAN party that just got out of hand, causing a ruckus and spilling out down the block and around the world; creating too many millionaires for no good reason and causing too many sleepless nights surfing the neon pink.

The Internet quietly crept into every facet of our lives... no subject or topic was left unexplored in this binary medium. Suddenly, there it was, the authority on everything. Our lives encyclopedia-ed to death by bits and bites.

But the Internet has always been perceived as a connected medium; tied together by cables, servers and networks. Until now that is, because now everything has changed. And it's about time, the Internet has been tied to the ground for far too long, it's time for liberation. Independence Day. Bring it on!

The Internet is going Wireless -- for real this time.

There were a few false starts; you can Bluetooth yourself silly, but you won't get much further than 30 feet or so. The BlackBerry is great but a little limiting. And Wi-Fi services have been around for a long while but those were not really convenient, if you have to find something; it's not convenient. Finding a 'hot spot' is the space age equivalent of finding a 'needle in a haystack'; takes way too much time.

What changes things, what has finally given the Internet its liberation?

Verizon Wireless 3G EV-DO (evolution-data optimized) and other companies offering similar services around the world. This new technology will change how we view and use the world wide web. Verizon Wireless began commercial operations in Oct. of 2003 and is now expanding to over 125 million US consumers by the end of 2005.

With download speeds of 400 to 700 kbps and bursts up to 2 Mbps, 3G has really given us wireless Internet this time. It has or will turn the Internet into a truly wireless system that's devoid of any cables or lines and really make it omnipotent. It will be everywhere. No space within our biosphere will be without the Internet very soon.

For now Verizon Wireless or 3G is mainly located in the USA but this will quickly change as other 3G companies and systems start up to fulfill the demand. Wi-Fi may play a role too but will it go the way of the 'Beta'?

However, this wireless universe could not be possible without one other key element. The one element that also helped give the Internet its wings. The answer might or might not surprise you. What really gave the Internet its groove? Can you guess? Give up?

Finally, we come to the last element of this brand new liberated Internet -- the little notebook computer. Don't underestimate the power of this great little revolutionary device, it is doing for the Internet what the cell phone did for the phone industry -- making it wireless, portable, and accessible anywhere.

It could even be argued that it was the little notebook computer that gave the Internet its freedom. Finally cutting the cable and freeing the web, once and for all.

Once we had a portable computer that we could tuck under our arm and take anywhere; we naturally wanted to take the Internet along with it. After all, a computer without the Internet is like having Mickey Mouse without Disneyland -- a real downer -- any kid can tell you that!

Once the notebook or laptop computer gained in popularity, the demand for a wireless Internet grew right along with it. The portability factor being a strong selling point for both the notebook and the Internet.

Likewise, in order to take full advantage of each of them; for business operations, for personal communications, for emailing, for web surfing... a wireless portable Internet was the obvious next step. They compliment each other perfectly and one is not completely whole without the other.

Technology has created this unholy trinity (the Internet, wireless connections and the notebook computer) to fulfill our need for a portable communication system that we can take and access anywhere. Until now, the Internet was limited, tied to cables and wires...it never really got off the ground!

But watch out; the cables are cut, the training wheels are off, the bells are starting to ring real fast and this child has found its groove.

Is Broadband the Future of the Internet?

For most of the British public, the internet began in the 1990s where it was estimated that the internet grew by 100% per year. It was in the year 2000 when the UK was first introduced to broadband, although the majority of broadband users came from large companies, due to the high cost, the situation now is very different as consumers can buy broadband for as little as 10 per month.

The difference between broadband and dialup is very small in price but broadband speeds can be significantly faster. This will gradually force dialup connections to extinction. According to BT, broadband is now available in 99.6% of households in the UK, 65% of UK households have an internet connection, and of those with internet, 55% are broadband connections.

This may all sound great, but that is far from the truth on a global scale. The Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Developments (OECD) examined broadband services in 30 countries worldwide this year, concluding that the UK is in fact, in the bottom third of the list. Japan was found to have the cheapest price for broadband at 11p per megabyte, while also proving to be the fastest with speeds of 100 megabyte per second. The UKs cheapest broadband comes out at 1.81 per megabyte with speeds of up to 26 megabytes per second (but only in very limited areas).

So whats next? Well according to some, we may not need to invest highly in broadband technology after all.

To play catch up in broadband speeds by investing in infrastructure would cost the UK a lot of money. BT are investing in creating a UK-wide fibre optic network that could deliver superfast speeds of 100Mb, but is it worth it? Yes, but only if the internet stays as a World Wide Network.

Researchers in the US are looking to invest $350m not on broadband technology but towards what claims to be the successor to the internet. Similarities can be found in Europe where the EUs Future and Internet Research (F.I.R.E.) programme plan to invest money on the new internet? This has led to suggestions that the internet will be regionalised, therefore, the end of www? For someone in Europe wanting to access networks in America or Asia would have to pay more than someone wanting to browse within the EU.

The future of the internet is difficult to judge, with timescales of 10-15 years, these claims are still at the earliest of stages, till then; we just need to wait and see.

These crimes include the misuse of this form of communication to other people - these crimes are called online harassment and cyberstalking.

Online harassment impacts the life of a person and makes them a victim. It is not uncommon for online harassment to have the victim fearing for their safety and security, having anxiety over the harassment and feeling a sense of insecurity, unpredictability and uncertainty about their every day life as someone begins to cyber stalk them.

The Internet is really a treasure trove for online harassment - people feel indestructible on the net and can feel familiar with people that they've "met" online. People talk freely about themselves and give a lot of information about them, more than they would to a stranger on the street.

While there is no simple definition of cyberstalking or online harassment, the most simple definition was made by Maxwell in 2001 which defines online harassment as "...the use of electronic communication including pagers, cell phones, emails and the Internet, to bully, threaten, harass, and intimidate a victim."

Currently, there are no laws or statutes that provide for online harassment; however there is a bill that has been filed with the United States Senate that would ban online harassment.

There are countless people who have 'jumped on the bandwagon' to promote the cyberstalking and online harassment and the need for a law that will ban and provide law that can be upheld in countless cases of these crimes. It seems, especially when you search the Internet for cyber stalking and online harassment that the target seems to be teenagers, and using social sites such as MySpace and FaceBook as well as a plethora of other social websites where people can post their profile and chat and meet other people in the 'community'.

Online harassment can be either direct or indirect. Direct online harassment would include threats, intimidating messages and bullying that is sent directly to a victim via email or other forms of online communication or by hindering the service of the Internet, such as hacking. Indirect online harassment includes rumor spreading in forums and social websites on the Internet, signing someone up for unwanted services or posting private information about a victim online without permission.
